Android XR: Xreal Aura will be released in the fall

Google and Xreal have jointly announced that Xreal Aura (formerly Project Aura) will launch this fall. However, the delivery date of the extended reality glasses, writes Xreal, may vary by region. The market launch is planned in the USA, Great Britain, Japan, South Korea and a number of selected EU countries, including Germany and Austria.

Xreal is still keeping the price secret. However, according to the company, the computer glasses will cost less than $1,500. Interested parties can now reserve copies for a deposit. The glasses will support corrective lenses.

Xreal Aura is the second product based on Google’s “spatial” operating system Android XR, after the Samsung Galaxy XR VR headset. It was created in close collaboration between Google and Xreal and technically goes beyond the display glasses with which Xreal has previously made a name for itself.

The diagonal field of view is significantly larger at 70 degrees. With Android XR as a basis and full Gemini integration, the Xreal Aura offers comparable functions to the full-fledged VR headset Samsung Galaxy This combination makes the device technically unique. There are also functions that were previously reserved for full-fledged VR headsets, such as spatial tracking, object anchoring and hand tracking. When it comes to the display, Xreal is based on previous devices: Micro-OLEDs are used with 1920 × 1200 pixels per eye and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.

Android XR: More device classes planned

The slim form factor is made possible by moving the main processing unit and battery into a wired pocket computer. This means the glasses themselves weigh less than a fifth of the Samsung headset. At the same time, it surpasses it in terms of performance: Xreal Aura will be the first computer glasses in which Qualcomm’s premium XR chip Snapdragon Reality Elite, announced on Tuesday, is used. Its predecessor works in the Samsung Galaxy XR, which is significantly slower, especially when it comes to AI tasks. The X1S coprocessor in the glasses, developed by Xreal, is responsible for sensor processing and low-latency display.

The use cases largely correspond to those of the Samsung headset: Google and

In addition to the Xreal Aura computer glasses, which can still be clearly recognized as such, Google is working with other partners on AI glasses that are suitable for everyday use. They are similar in appearance and function to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses and are also scheduled to come onto the market in the fall. This means that Google would then have three device classes based on Android XR on offer. A fourth is to follow next year: AI glasses with mini displays similar to the Meta Ray-Ban display.
