Claude Fable 5 is no longer accessible to all Anthropic subscribers. The most powerful AI model in the Claude range remains included in the Max and Team Premium packages, but with capped access. Pro and Team Standard subscribers lose all free access and must now pay for each request. Anthropic points out the gluttony of the AI model in terms of computing power.
As expected, Claude Fable 5, the latest version of Anthropic’s generative AI, is no longer accessible to all subscribers. Since July 20, 2026, the AI model has become a permanent feature of the most expensive subscriptions of the company, namely Max and Team Premium.
The use of Fable 5 nevertheless remains restricted by access limited to 50% of the usual usage quotas. Despite the chosen subscription, it is not possible to chat infinitely with Fable 5. If the user exceeds their usage quota, they must go to the checkout a second time to purchase usage credits. If you don’t want to spend more money, you will have to fall back on less expensive AI models like Claude Opus, Sonnet or Haiku.

No more free access for certain subscribers
Subscribers to the Pro and Team Standard packages are the big losers from this change, which has been pushed back several times by Anthropic. They lose all free access to Fable 5 and will now have to pay for each request sent to Fable 5 with usage credits. To help the pill, Anthropic offers them a one-time credit of 100 dollars.
Note that the usage credits sold by Anthropic for Fable 5 are the highest in the entire Claude line. Prices are almost twice as high as the Opus 4.8 model. Whatever the amounts, this tariff shift marks a break with the subscription model unlimited everything from Anthropic. Previously, subscriptions allowed unlimited chatting with all models in the range. Anthropic is now opting for usage-based billing, a choice which could significantly increase the bill for Claude’s most intensive users.
The problem of computing power
However, it should be remembered that the limitations governing Fable 5 are suspended from the evolution of computing resources of the company. Indeed, Claude Fable 5 is a particularly demanding model in terms of computing power. Anthropic is committed to bringing Fable 5 back to the heart of its subscriptions, without additional usage credits, as soon as its computing power allows.
The pricing model with usage credits is only one temporary solution to the explosion in demand. To try to answer this, Anthropic continues to invest in more servers. According to ReutersAnthropic is also negotiating a server rental contract with Meta of up to $10 billion over a period of two years.
