As announced, the new funding program for electric cars can be used retroactively for registrations since the beginning of the year. The Bundestag in Berlin decided this. However, it is not possible to apply for the state subsidy yet because the corresponding internet platform must first be launched. According to previous information, this should happen in May.

Parliament does not have to agree to the details of the new purchase bonus. It is planned that private customers can apply for state funding when purchasing purely electric cars, plug-in hybrids and electric cars with range extenders. Depending on the type of vehicle and personal circumstances, it is between 1,500 and 6,000 euros. However, there are income limits up to which it is paid out. This is a household income of 80,000 euros per year, with two children 90,000 euros.
Funding based on income and number of children
The basic funding for purely electric cars is 3,000 euros. For households with a maximum income of 60,000 euros there is 4,000 euros, for households with a maximum income of 45,000 euros there is 5,000 euros. The funding increases by 500 euros per child, up to a maximum of 1,000 euros in total. There is less money for so-called plug-in hybrids, which can run on both electricity and fuel. For these cars and for vehicles with range extenders, the basic funding is 1,500 euros. Range extenders are small combustion engines that increase the range of electric cars.
Greens see a disincentive
In the Bundestag debate, Till Steffen from the Greens criticized the fact that the promotion of plug-in hybrids and range extender vehicles created the “absolutely wrong incentives”. Because in principle these would run on gasoline. Higher earners also benefited from the purchase premium. “We need an offer where nurses in rural areas can also afford a cheap, small electric car. They leave you out in the cold,” said Steffen to the government coalition.
