Deezer tool shows: 43 percent have AI music in their playlists – without knowing it

AI-generated music is widely available on streaming platforms. As the provider Deezer reports in a press release, 43 percent of users who switch to Deezer from another app have AI music in their playlists – often without knowing that the music they are listening to is not human-made. In order to offer more transparency, the streaming provider has now released a new tool that can filter all known platforms for AI music.

45 percent don’t want AI in their playlists

Many artists are critical of AI-generated music. The reason for this is not only fake songs that imitate real people – but also the fact that they are losing income through mass-produced AI titles. Deezer estimates that 44 percent of all new songs are now AI-generated. Modern tools such as Suno, Udio or Riffusion make it possible to create complete albums without any prior musical knowledge that can hardly be distinguished from man-made music. A Deezer study from last November found that 97 percent of respondents could not confidently identify AI-generated songs. This is also why 80 percent were in favor of clear labeling.

73 percent of respondents also said they want to know whether a service recommends AI-generated music that was generated entirely using AI. Another 45 percent would prefer to completely exclude AI music from their playlists. Deezer’s new detection tool now gives users the opportunity to check whether their playlists contain AI songs for the first time. To do this, the AI detector connects to the respective account and scans it for AI-generated songs. What’s special: It is compatible with a total of 20 apps, including Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud and YouTube Music. The new tool supports 27 languages, is free to use for everyone and also offers the option of sharing the results of the analysis. However, it does not specify which songs were specifically generated using AI.

Editorial recommendations

Deezer is taking action against AI-generated music

According to its own information, Deezer is flooded with almost 75,000 AI-generated titles every day – that’s over two million per month. Despite this flood, AI songs only make up one to three percent of the total streams. Around 85 percent of these could be classified as fraudulent and demonetized. As Techcrunch reports, Deezer continues to position itself as one of the most aggressive opponents of AI music in the industry. While competitors like Apple Music and Spotify rely on labeling, Deezer actively removes AI songs from recommendations and excludes them from editorial playlists.

In December 2024, Deezer even filed two patents for its recognition technology. CEO Alexis Lanternier explains: “By detecting and flagging AI-generated music over the last year and a half, Deezer has been at the forefront of transparency in music streaming. Since no other company has followed our lead, we decided to make it possible for everyone to check whether their playlists contain synthetic music – regardless of which streaming platform is used.”
