The company from Lingen in Emsland says it has signed “a declaration of intent to take over the license” of the Schwalbe brand. A production hall in Suhl was also rented. It is located in the Heinrichs district on the historic site of the manufacturer Simson, who built the Schwalbe from the mid-1960s.
Production of the historic Schwalbe ended in 1986. 30 years later, the Munich company Govecs brought the Schwalbe back in an electric version. The two-wheeler, whose design had clear echoes of the original, was produced in Poland. However, at the end of last year, Govecs had to file for bankruptcy and production was stopped.
The swallow is revitalized
Now Emco wants to start it again. “The swallow needs to get some air under its wings again – in Suhl,” said Yasmin von Schweinitz, co-owner of Emco. “Our goal is not only to revitalize an icon, but also to consistently lead it into the future.”
In recent years, Emco E-Scooter has taken over brands of electric scooters from several insolvent manufacturers. These include Unu from the Berlin company of the same name and Kumpan, known for electric scooters with a retro look.
It is not known whether Emco will adopt the design of the electric Schwalbe from Govecs. Emco did not yet want to give details about the start of production or the number of units. Production in Suhl is scheduled to start this year.
