Out today is the newest monthly update to FEX for this emulator for running Linux x86/x86_64 binaries on AArch64 (ARM64) Linux systems, including games and the likes of Steam Play with Windows games. This Valve-sponsored project that is quite important for the upcoming Steam Frame has rolled out more performance improvements, memory savings, and other improvements with FEX 2604.
Memory savings improvements landed for FEX 2604 that are particularly beneficial for systems with just 8GB or 16GB of RAM, which is good news considering the ongoing RAM pricing these days. Various improvements are making FEX more applicable on those ARM devices with just 16GB or less of memory.
FEX 2604 also brings a variety of performance improvements, including some optimizations to avoid jumping out of the JIT for an average of a 3.7x improvement for some operations. Games using x87 transcendentals particularly benefit like for Fallout: New Vegas.
Plus there are bug fixes and other workarounds with today’s FEX 2604 release. Those wishing to learn more about this important project for x86_64 software on ARM64 Linux can do so via FEX-Emu.com.
