Fiji Simo’s decision is motivated by the chronic illness from which she has suffered for seven years and which had worsened, forcing her to take sick leave last April.

What impact does this departure have on OpenAI?
Fiji Simo’s withdrawal creates a leadership vacuum at a critical time for OpenAI. She was seen as a likely candidate to take on even more responsibilities, particularly in view of a potential IPO.
His departure adds to a series of recent changes within management. The current number 2 of OpenAI will however remain part-time advisor. A solution that allows him to ” continue to contribute to the mission without sacrificing my chances of recovery. “
