Counterpoint Research has forecasted that shipments of smartphones with generative AI (GenAI) capabilities will reach over 400 million units in 2025, accounting for around 30% of global smartphone shipments, a major increase from the 20% seen in 2024. Driven by technological advancements, improvements in chip technology, and the adoption of lightweight large language models (LLMs), smartphone manufacturers are expanding GenAI features from flagship to mid-range models, the market analysis firm said. However, GenAI applications have yet to attract strong consumer interest, Counterpoint Research noted, with smartphone makers exploring more practical AI use cases to try and stoke demand. Although Chinese smartphone brands have introduced GenAI features in their flagship models, they are not expected to bring them to mid- and low-end models until 2026 or 2027, according to the report.
