Initially announced for June, Google’s most advanced artificial intelligence model, Gemini 3.5 Prois still waiting. According to consistent information, his deployment has been postponed of several months. This setback is not trivial: it reveals internal difficulties and places the Mountain View firm in a delicate position in the face of competition which is not slowing down. The main cause of this postponement is now known and touches a nerve point in current technological competition.

What are the precise reasons for this delay?

The heart of the problem lies in the programming capabilities of Gemini 3.5 Pro. Internal testing reportedly revealed that the model simply did not live up to expectations, particularly for code generation. It is a bitter failure on a ground that has become absolutely central.

This skill has indeed become a major battlefield for the giants of theartificial intelligence. While competitors like OpenAI with GPT-5.6 Sol AI or Anthropic with its advanced models display remarkable performanceGoogle is struggling to keep up. An attempt at a correction took place at the end of June, with an update of the training data, but the results remained below expectations.

How does the competition take advantage of this situation?

This misstep is a real boon for the Mountain View firm’s rivals. OpenAI and Anthropic did not wait and have already launched models deemed more efficient, capturing attention and, potentially, paying customers who are looking for the most effective tools on the market. For its part, Meta is not to be outdone and has unveiled Muse Spark 1.1, specifically designed for coding tasks.

The pressure on the shoulders of Google is therefore immense. Users, and in particular developers who constitute a significant part of premium subscribersdo not have infinite patience. They could very well turn to more sophisticated and reliable competing solutions. Every day late widen the gap and weakens its position in this strategic segment.

Google Alphabet

What are the consequences for Google and what happens next?

The first, very concrete, consequence was financial. Following the revelation of this postponement by Bloombergthe action of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has fell by almost 4%. This immediate reaction testifies to the nervousness of financial marketswho scrutinize every move in this frantic race for AI.

Internally, the situation would give rise to serious concerns among engineers and researchers. Officially, a company spokesperson simply confirmed that tests were underway with partners, without advancing any new launch date. Google must now not only catch up on technical delaybut also reassure about its ability to remain a leading player.
