YouTube has introduced a long‑awaited update that finally lets us hide Shorts from search results.

The change, rolled out in January 2026, comes after years of complaints from viewers who felt overwhelmed by endless bite‑sized clips when looking for full videos. For many, this feels like YouTube returning to its roots as a platform for long‑form content.

Better control over search results

The update renames the “Sort by” option to “Prioritise” and adds a Popularity metric to highlight trending uploads. More importantly, it allows us to filter out Shorts entirely.

This means creators who focus on traditional, longer videos may now enjoy better visibility, while viewers regain control over what they see.

Why it matters

Short‑form video has dominated feeds for years, often overshadowing tutorials, reviews, and longer-form entertainment. But finally, it looks like YouTube has acknowledged that not everyone wants TikTok‑style scrolling, especially on big-screen TVs.

This move also signals a shift in strategy, balancing the company’s push for Shorts with respect for long‑form creators that could help restore visibility for channels that rely on detailed storytelling and in‑depth analysis.

How it works

When searching, simply apply the new filter to exclude Shorts. At present, the feature only works in search results, though reports suggest YouTube may expand it to home feeds and recommendations later.

Until then, third‑party tools and browser extensions remain useful for those who want Shorts hidden everywhere.

Opinion

YouTube’s decision shows a willingness to balance algorithmic pushes with user choice. Shorts will remain a major part of the platform, but the ability to hide them restores a sense of agency.

For those of us who value long‑form storytelling, this feels like YouTube rediscovering its heritage and ancestry.
