Lying by an applicant in an interview can also have long-term consequences if word of the fraud gets around in the industry.

During a job interview, it is human and understandable for candidates to want to present their best side. But things become problematic when this desire leads them to lie. Caution is advised here because employers have a trained eye for when something is not entirely true.

Risks of dishonesty

The fact is that the potential consequences of dishonesty in job interviews can be serious and long-term. If a lie is discovered, it can not only mean the immediate end of the application process, but can also cause lasting damage to the applicant’s reputation – especially in closely networked industries. But even if the lie initially goes undetected and the candidate gets the job, it can later come to light and cause problems.

A common reason for dishonesty in job interviews is the pressure to present yourself in the best possible way. It is not uncommon for skills to be exaggerated or invented – for fear of appearing in a negative light. However, it is important to note that authenticity and honesty are just as important to employers as a candidate’s skills. They show the employer that the applicant is confident enough to honestly present their strengths and weaknesses.
