Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green, unexpectedly announced a few days ago for a release on February 27 on Nintendo Switch, are already taking the top spots in the eShop even before being available.
Charts dominated in the four corners of the world… and in France too
Several English-speaking sources have confirmed that the two games occupy the first two positions of the eShop bestsellers in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. What makes the performance even more impressive is that these two pre-order titles are ahead of permanent eShop juggernauts like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Minecraft or Animal Crossing New Horizons. Combined with Pokémon Legends: ZA which remains in tenth position, the Pokémon franchise now occupies three of the top ten places in the ranking.
Is 20 euros too expensive? Apparently not for everyone
The announcement nevertheless triggered a wave of indignation online. At 19.99 euros, many felt that charging this Price for games over 20 years old was an abuseespecially since Nintendo could have integrated them into Nintendo Switch Online. However, the Switch Online features are incompatible with the possibility of transferring pocket monsters using Pokémon Home.
However, the figures speak for themselves, the discontent on the networks has not translated into a boycott and the hype around Pokémon is still as powerful as ever.
A launch that comes right on the 30th anniversary of Pokémon
The date of February 27 was obviously not chosen at random. It coincides with Pokémon Day and the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations, to which a special Pokémon Presents will be added on the same day. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have also clarified that multiplayer functionalities, formerly linked to the Game Link cable or the GBA wireless adapter, will now pass through the integrated local wireless connection of the Switch and Switch 2.
