Many companies have now integrated AI tools into their workflows. But there is a problem: Only about one in four companies know exactly what their use of AI actually costs. That’s according to a new study by KPMG, reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Accordingly, only 26 percent of the companies surveyed stated that they had a complete overview of their AI costs. 50 percent have partial insight, while 22 percent have no transparency at all or only find out the actual costs when the invoice is received.

The end of the flat rate party

Thanks to flat rate tariffs for AI use, this wasn’t a problem for a long time. However, AI providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and Salesforce are now increasingly charging for their services based on actual usage. The basis for this is tokens, which are used to measure the processing of inputs and outputs.
