Kai Grunwitz: “Exnovation is a strategic decision against technical nostalgia”

Fire extinguisher

Why do so many digitalization projects fail even though companies invest billions in innovation? In the new episode of TechTalk, the podcast from Computerwoche and CIO, Kai Grunwitz, Managing Director of Kyndryl Germany, has a logical explanation. He sees an important reason for failure in the lack of exnovation, i.e. a conscious end to things that were once good but now stand in the way.

Tidy up like Marie Kondo

Just as the city of Rome was built on new historical layers, many IT landscapes have emerged, explains the Kyndryl boss: New systems are added, but the old ones never really disappear. The result is increasing complexity, rising costs and falling speed of innovation.

As a solution, the manager recommends an approach that is strongly reminiscent of Marie Kondo’s tidying philosophy. Companies would have to ask themselves much more consistently which systems still provide real benefit – similar to sorting out a wardrobe. While Marie Kondo asks whether an item still “sparks joy,” according to Grunwitz, IT needs to check whether an application can still scale, secure and enable the business.
