Spain will allocate 100 million to Spanish companies that promote European digital sovereignty

He Government of Spain is going to allocate 100 million from euros to Spanish companies that promote projects to develop European digital sovereignty in collaboration with companies from other EU countries. This has been confirmed by the Minister for Digital Transformation and the Public Service, Óscar López, within the framework of the Mobile World Congress 2026.

The announcement also comes within the framework of the IPCEI of AI, a project considered Important of Common European Interest on AI that encompasses different high-impact initiatives for Europe led by the German government. Its goal is to develop a next-generation European AI ecosystem, fostering public-private collaboration across the AI ​​value chain.

The minister has also stressed the importance of Germany and Spain joining forces in defense of a European model that combines innovation, regulation, competitiveness and digital rights, in addition to highlighting that «we have the talent, the industry, the values ​​and the ambition to become the vanguard of AI in Europe«.

Furthermore, he has assured that «Spain is committed to the European race for AI. But we can’t run alone. Europe needs more cooperation and policies aimed at the single market. The Government and Spanish companies want to work side by side with Germany and other Member States to achieve European digital dreams«.

Representatives of large Spanish and German companies also participated in the meeting at the MWC in which the preparation of this economic item was announced, with the participation of the Minister of Digital Transformation of Germany, Karsten Wildberger. Among them Telefónica, Indra, Santander, La Caixa, Iberia, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Orange, SAP, Schwarz Grup (Lidl), Mastercard, Volkswagen and Nokia.

Several representatives of startups from both countries were also present at the meeting, such as Multiverse Computing, Open Chip, Quilimanjaro, Sherpa AI, Zhappiens AI, OpenNebula, Applus+IDIADA, Shakers, Tucuvi and Quside.

On the other hand, Spain has chosen nine candidates for the IPCEI of AIwhich will be presented to the European Commission. They are the patrons of IDIADA, OpenNebula, Indra, Multiverse Computing, Telefónica, Openchip, Ideaded, Horse powertrain and Semidynamics.

These companies will have to Now look for partners in other countries to scale your project and ensure that it has a European dimension to facilitate its competitiveness with other regions of the world. The candidate companies will participate on March 10 and 11 in Berlin in a conference to identify cross-border collaborations with other participants in the AI ​​IPCEI from different EU countries.
