The Chinese manufacturer BYD prepares the introduction in Europe of the Denza Z9GTa high-end electric model expected in early April. This grand tourer in shooting brake format must above all serve as a technological showcase for a new solution of ultra-fast charging called Flash Charging, designed to significantly reduce the time spent at the terminal.

The principle put forward is based on a simple formula: “ready in 5, full in 9”. Concretely, the technology would make it possible to go from around 10% to 70% battery in five minutes, then to reach an almost full charge in less than ten minutes. Even in extreme cold conditions, down to –30°C, charging would remain fast, with around twelve minutes needed to go from 20% to 97%.

Two major technical developments

On the one hand, a new generation of charging stations capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW of power, a level far superior to the rapid infrastructures currently present in Europe. On the other, an evolution of the Blade battery developed by BYD. This second generation retains the lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry already used by the brand, but with improvements intended to facilitate ionic exchanges and limit wear linked to recharge cycles.

On paper, the objective is to reduce the recharging time constraint as much as possible in order to bring the use of an electric car closer to that of a thermal vehicle. In reality, this promise will largely depend on the available infrastructure. Terminals capable of reaching such powers remain extremely rare today in Europe, where the most widespread fast networks generally cap at around 350 kW.

The Z9GT targets the premium segment

This car is based on a dedicated technical platform and has a battery announced at 122 kWh. In its propulsion configuration, the range could reach around 800 kilometers. An electric version with three motors is also mentioned, with a power exceeding 960 horsepower and a 0 to 100 km/h announced in less than three seconds.

The cabin also emphasizes the multimedia experience. The audio system was developed in partnership with the French brand Devialet and is based on a speaker architecture designed to exploit Dolby Atmos technology, in order to create immersive sound reproduction in the cabin.

Still, the central question concerns the actual availability of this ultra-fast charging. BYD indicates that it has already installed several thousand Flash Charging stations in China and plans a gradual international deployment, including a first phase in Europe. However, details on this network and its schedule remain limited, which leaves in doubt the ability of European drivers to take full advantage of recharging presented as almost instantaneous.
