Sales of electric cars are growing strongly in Europe. Despite the arrival of Chinese competitors, Tesla is back at the top of the rankings with an increase in sales that is spectacular to say the least.
The current context is very favorable for sales of electric cars. More and more motorists are now ready to make the move towards battery-powered vehicles thanks to increasingly attractive models. Thus, no less than 268,487 electric cars were sold in May 2026 in Europe, which represents an increase of 39.1% compared to May 2025. Projections even estimate that a quarter of the models sold worldwide should be electric this year.
Tesla takes back its crown: a brilliant revenge
Very good news which still hides some disparities. In Europe, the big winners for the month of May are, to say the least,… unexpected. Despite long-repeated calls for a boycott, it is Tesla who are once again leading the way. The Model Y came in well ahead with 17,183 units delivered, an increase of 68.3% compared to May 2025. The Model 3 took second place with 9,566 units, which represents a spectacular growth of 198.2%.
Why the success of the Model Y and Model 3 is not weakening
There is no secret behind this success: despite their now advanced age, the Model Y and Model 3 remain excellent vehicles with a price/performance ratio that is difficult to match. With €40,990 for the SUV and €36,990 for the sedan with full equipment, high autonomy and an efficient charging network, what more could you ask for? A more compact size, perhaps? Reason why the Skoda Elroq closes the podium with 9,549 units sold, a modest increase of 3.5%.
Skoda, Renault, Volkswagen: who is holding up against Tesla?
But where are the real small cars? In fourth place with the Renault 5 and its 7,390 copies. Note a nice progression, with 64.7%. Soon replaced by the restyled model, the Volkswagen ID.3 is hot on the heels of the French with 7,200 cars sold. Not bad for a vehicle that is still five years old! There is no doubt that dealers must grant nice discounts. The compact is also followed by two cousins: the Skoda Enyaq with 7,046 units and the Volkswagen ID.4 with 6,271 units.
The Leapmotor surprise: the new actor to watch
The eighth position is occupied by a Chinese, and it is neither a BYD nor an MG. Here is the little Leapmotor T03 which is doing well with its 5,826 units, up 502.5% compared to May 2025. The BMW iX3 follows with 5,518 models, while the Mercedes CLA enters the top 10 with 5,023 units. Considering how successful the German is, it is well deserved.
