Although AI increases speed, this only becomes a real competitive advantage when it is accompanied by judgment and practiced accountability.
3. Breaking point: Securing innovation
As described above, the use of generative AI can shorten collaborative discussions, which in turn can put a strain on the company’s ability to innovate. AI not only provides an initial solution suggestion, but also increases the likelihood that teams will agree on a common direction early on. However, real innovations rarely come from quick agreement: they come from productive friction, in-depth debates and by questioning established patterns of thought.
A key psychological mechanism of this early convergence is the so-called anchoring effect: Since AI delivers plausible results in a matter of seconds, this first draft acts as a cognitive anchor. The human brain therefore unconsciously orients itself towards this starting point, which prematurely narrows the search space for alternative solutions and can thus weaken the ability to innovate.
Managers are therefore faced with the additional task of consciously organizing productive contradiction. Critical questions and opposing perspectives are the necessary counterweight to AI-generated convergence. And: Organizations rarely lose their innovative power because they lack answers. Rather, because they stop seriously discussing alternatives. A higher speed in the solution process therefore does not automatically lead to a higher ability to innovate.
It is crucial that organizations continue to create spaces in which different perspectives meet, existing assumptions are questioned and new ideas can arise. In other words: AI creates convergence, innovation requires divergence.
AI is creating a new reality
These three breaking points make it clear that generative AI can fundamentally change not only work processes, but also the foundations of organizational performance. Knowledge is created differently, decisions are made differently and innovation develops under changed conditions.
The more AI is integrated into everyday work, the more important it becomes to consciously design the breaking points mentioned. The lasting benefits of AI come not just from the use of the technology, but from an organization’s ability to adapt its structures, learning processes and decision-making mechanisms to this new reality.
