Why you absolutely must (re)play the Invincible series

Because Invincible is finally… Invincible (well, almost eh)

With a code name like that, one could assume that Mark Grayson would dominate the proceedings. And even fear that the character imagined and created by Robert Kirkman is really far too powerful, to the point of drowning out any interest in his adventures. It was precisely the opposite that happened for a long time for the young man, half-human, half-Viltrumite, who became a super the day he came of age.

During the three previous seasons and while we continue to be sold the growing power of his powers, Invincible above all keeps getting broken in two, getting expensive and flirting very closely with death. If Invincible is inspired by the universe of superheroes and no longer hides its affiliation with the DC Comics ecosystem and the lore, more precisely, of Superman, However, he does not seek to make his hero the most powerful character. At least not right away. Which is all the more interesting for the rest of the proposed bestiary. Even if Invincible remains the central character, we do not lose sight of other super powerful people, like Atom Eve, Battle Beast, Monster Girl, Allen and obviously Omni-Man.

We therefore had to wait four seasons to truly appreciate Mark’s infinite potential. The more he loses, the stronger he becomes. The more it gets broken, the stronger it gets. And if death spares him, he pushes it back even further if he has to encounter it again. In season 4, currently streaming on Prime Video, Invincible is Earth’s Mightiest Hero. This was already the case in season 3, it’s true. But this time he is as powerful as his father Omni-Man. And the big bad guys hardly hurt him at all anymore.

Because it’s the big return of real (good) plot twists

Season 1 of Invincible will inevitably have a different place in our hearts, given the plot twist that occurs in the last minutes of the first episode. If the series has since kept the same mechanics, with a mid-credits scene teasing a future danger, a potential plot or an important revelation, the whole thing purred a little, especially during the previous season. This is not the case during this season 4, which goes – apart from one episode and we will come back to it – directly to the heart of the matter.

The expected return of Omni Man to Earth, if only one had to be discussed here, may have been expected, but it is the timing and the way of introducing it at the end of the episode that is remarkable. And because it was expected, therefore and necessary for the rest of the story, it is not the most important twist. The Reveal of the Grand Regent Thragg, the new challenge of Atom Eve… we can no longer count them and that’s a good thing because they are all important.

Because the most violent scene yet is in the current season

The massacre of the Guardians of the Globe was already one hell of a moment of violence in itself. The subway scene during the duel between Invincible and Omni-Man had raised the cursor even higher, to the point of being repeated as a Fatality for the character in the Mortal Kombat game. And, just to refresh your memory, the fight at the end of season 3 between Conquest, Eve et Mark had also displayed an incredible rate of violence and brutality.

But there, Invincible was even stronger in this season 4. And it is once again with Conquest that the gore reaches its maximum ceiling… although the universe of Invincible is sufficiently violent to offer us in the future (from the end of the season?) an even more unbearable sequence. Yes, unbearable, that’s literally the word. If we had closed our eyes a little during the massacre of the subway passengers, grimaced when we saw Mark’s bones break in front of Conquest and Eve’s body put through the mill by this same villain, there, we are very close to vomiting, frankly. Invincible Season 4 Episode 5 gives us the most hardcore scene to date in the series and just reminds us that when it comes to morbid cruelty, the Viltrumites ultimately have no equal.

Because suspense is different from comics

Obviously, the comparison with the raw product, the comics, is made regularly and as the series progresses in its development. Certain story elements had already been arranged in the past in a different way – the massacre of the Guardians of the Globe again – to give rhythm, interest and power to the viewing of the series.

Some comic strips look even better in the series, even if the animation – the weak point of the product broadcast on the Prime Video platform – is sometimes a little too rigid. The priority was placed on the dialogues and the fights, more than on the expressions of the characters, and this is still felt four seasons after the launch of Invincible. The revelations around the Unspeakable Traitor, Thragg, Argall, the origins of Nolan, these are all points in a non-exhaustive list of choices made by the creative teams and Robert Kirkman himself, which are approached in a different way to that of the comics. This can be explained by the fact that Invincible cannot follow the rhythm or the length of the work.

Moreover, the creator ofInvincible – and dad The Walking Deadlet’s remember – also indicated that one of the subplots of season 4 – without spoiling, it has a link with Darkblood and Hell – was new to the comics and therefore would have a development in the series. Given the stakes – the unleashing of Hell on Earth and a power struggle between Satan and a fiery protagonist in the underworld – there will be plenty to occupy Invincible.
