Google Messages is starting to roll out its new customization option: conversation themes and different wallpapers.

Since 2024, Google Messages has offered to slightly modify the colors of the bubbles and the background with nine basic variations. Today, Google is starting to introduce “ conversation themes “. This new feature replaces the old color change menu with dynamic wallpapers and color palettes.

Complete themes and customizable wallpapers

The new discussion configuration interface on Google Messages is now more complete, with the possibility of previewing the famous conversation themes before applying them. Below, a carousel allows you to choose between colors based on Android’s “Dynamic Colors” system and a selection of wallpapers organized by categories. Among the themes offered by Google, we find visuals around animals, architecture, landscapes, or even black and white photos. The application obviously allows you to select a personal image directly from the smartphone gallery.

There is also an important difference compared to the old system: the modifications made are only visible to the user who applies them. This makes sense since your interlocutor may not want to end up with a wallpaper depicting a monkey. The themes in question do not appear to be limited to the RCS protocol, with traditional SMS threads also being affected, including when communicating with iPhone users. Text bubbles have also been revised to automatically adapt to the chosen wallpaper to provide optimal readability of messages.

A gradual deployment

The feature is rolling out as part of the Google Messages app beta program. It is therefore not yet accessible to all users on Android. If you want to get the latest Google Messages features before everyone else, you can also join the beta program here.

On Reddit, the lucky ones say they were alerted to the news by a small red dot appearing in the application menu. Once the option is available, the old “Change colors” label automatically changes to “Conversations theme”. As always, the deployment is being done in successive waves, with availability to all Google Messages users in the coming weeks or months.
