Overall, the study situation remains inconsistent. However, it is plausible that productivity gains from new technologies only become apparent with a delay – similar to the introduction of the PC, the effects of which only became clear after a decade. The big breakthrough in AI is also likely to be imminent.

Why AI works in the home office

However, one group is already clearly benefiting: remote employees. As already known, remote work brings numerous advantages, such as no commute time, more flexible working hours and fewer interruptions.

A new study has now shown another major advantage for companies that enable their employees to work from home: AI.

The study by Michael Blank, a research fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), and his colleagues found that AI has a much greater impact at home than in the office. It is based on browsing data from more than 200,000 US households.

A key finding: AI supports remote employees not only with professional tasks, but also with private activities – such as travel planning, shopping or everyday problems. This means you save time overall and work more efficiently.

Another factor is the greater autonomy in the home office. Without close control by companies, employees can integrate AI more flexibly into their everyday work. They also switch more often between professional and private tasks – a behavior that is made even easier by AI.
