Merged overnight for Mesa 26.1 is enabling the Arm Ethos U85 NPU within the EthosU Gallium3D driver so that with Mesa’s TEFLON framework can begin taking on AI workloads.

There has been the Arm Ethos NPU accelerator driver for the Linux kernel and the EthosU Gallium3D driver in Mesa was merged for the U65 NPU while now the U85 NPU support is also available in upstream Mesa.

Arm Ethos specs

Open-source developer Tomeu Vizoso took care of working out the U85 NPU support in the EthosU Gallium3D driver. He explained in the month old merge request that is now merged to Mesa 26.1-devel:

“The Ethos U85 adds incrementally to the cmdstream used in the U65. We move to the newer weight encoder in Vela, as vendored code as well, for both U65 and U85. We add a new scheduler implementation for U85 and a few other changes that should benefit U65 as well.

It has been tested on the Corstone-1000 with Cortex-A320 FVP.”

The Arm Ethos U85 is advertised as being 20% more energy efficient than the Arm Ethos U55 and U65, higher performance for edge AI use cases, and scales from 128 to 2048 MAC units. The U85 can be found paired with various Arm Cortex-A and Cortex-M processors.
