Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) said its instant messaging app XChat will launch on Apple App Store on April 17, as Musk pushes ahead with plans to build a super app similar to China’s WeChat. An Android release date has yet to be announced. Musk, who acquired Twitter in 2022, has repeatedly cited WeChat as a model for an all-in-one platform combining messaging, payments and services. XChat is positioned as the core communications layer of that strategy.

The app began internal testing in May 2025 and entered public beta on iOS in March 2026, leveraging X’s user base of more than 500 million monthly active users. XChat will offer end-to-end encryption, voice and video calls, disappearing messages, screenshot blocking and message recall, the company said. It is built using the Rust programming language and allows users to sign up without a phone number. [TechNode Reporting]
