Less bureaucracy, more leeway: The adjustments to the AI Act are intended to ensure the competitiveness of European companies.

The EU member states and the European Parliament have reached a preliminary agreement: The so-called “Omnibus Legislative Package VII” will relax key deadlines of the EU AI Regulation (AI Act).

The proposal stipulates that the strict requirements for high-risk AI systems will only become binding from December 2027 – the start was originally planned for August 2026. This affects, among other things, applications in biometric surveillance, critical infrastructure and law enforcement. In addition, industrial machines and their specific regulations should be largely excluded from the new regulation.

Reducing bureaucracy vs. deepfake protection

The changes are part of the European Commission’s efforts to reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Brussels is reacting to clear criticism from business. Companies like Siemens had criticized that EU regulations that were too rigid would make competition with providers from the USA and Asia much more difficult.
