With “NetHack”, one of the oldest computer games that is still actively being developed has received another major update, from version 3.6.7 it goes straight to 5.0.0. The update not only makes bug fixes, but also brings numerous changes to the game itself – in total, those responsible speak of more than 3,100 modifications to the code. All can be viewed.

However, the team warns that some of the entries – especially about new features – may contain spoilers. In addition, previous saves will no longer run after the update.
Also a ten year update break
“NetHack” has been around since 1987; the first released version was a significant development of the game “Hack” published in 1984, which in turn was based heavily on the four-year-older “Rogue”. After that, updates appeared at irregular intervals, sometimes with a gap of more than ten years. After the most recent major update to version 3.6.0, several smaller updates were released, mainly fixing errors. The current update improves, among other things, the general architecture of the software.
“NetHack” is a text-based role-playing game whose “graphics” initially consisted of ASCII characters. The game now runs on a wide variety of platforms, including graphical interfaces that many players prefer. With a previously customized character, you explore a continually regenerated dungeon in search of the Amulet of Yendor, which the evil Moloch stole. It’s explicitly not about killing everything and everyone, but about exploration. “NetHack” is mainly known for its enormous scope, humor and the fact that the game seems to be prepared for every conceivable gaming situation. There is a comprehensive “travel guide” that has been adapted for the current update.
