Spotify could finally be fixing one of its most frustrating limitations.

New findings suggest the platform is working on bringing playlist folder management to its mobile app. This is something users have been asking for for over a decade.

Playlist folders themselves aren’t new; they’ve been around since 2010. They let users group playlists into categories like workouts, road trips or moods. The catch is that you can only create and manage those folders on desktop or the web.

On mobile, you can see them, but not edit them.

That might be about to change. Code spotted by Android Authority in a recent version of the Spotify app points to full folder controls coming directly to mobile. This would include the ability to create, rename, delete and organise folders without needing to switch devices.

The strings suggest folder creation could be added as a native option within the app’s Create menu or through the Your Library tab. This may depend on how the interface is set up. There are also references to moving playlists in and out of folders. This would make reorganising large libraries far more manageable on a phone.

One small caveat: deleting a folder may also remove the playlists inside it. The app appears to include a confirmation prompt warning users before doing so. However, it’s something to keep in mind if the feature rolls out unchanged.

If it does arrive, this would close a long-standing gap between Spotify’s desktop and mobile experience. For users who primarily listen on their phones, which is most people, it removes the need to jump to another device just to tidy up their library.

As with all app teardowns, there’s no guarantee this feature will make it to a public release. Still, given how long playlist folders have been part of Spotify’s ecosystem, bringing proper mobile support feels less like an experiment and more like an overdue upgrade.
