Smartwatch apps have often felt like stripped-down companions rather than fully usable experiences, especially with music where control is usually limited and navigation feels secondary.

So Spotify’s latest Wear OS update is looing to rectify that by rethinking how users interact with music from their wrist; focusing on gestures, quicker access, and a more immersive visual experience.

A gesture-first design that actually makes sense

At the centre of the update is a redesigned interface that opens with the familiar player, but introduces swipe-based navigation that’s meant to make navigation through the app feel more natural.

A downward swipe shifts the experience into a immersive, music-first view, where artwork takes over and controls become gesture-driven, which includes being able to tap to play or pause as well as double-tapping to skip tracks.

Swiping up moves in the opposite direction, opening access to Home, Search, and Your Library, including downloads, making it easier to find something new without having to reach for your phone.

This approach will allow users to browse, discover, and manage music sessions directly from the device, reducing reliance on their phone and making everyday listening feel more immediate and seamless.

Small changes that make a big difference

Alongside gesture navigation, Spotify has also improved access to essential features such as the playback queue, sleep timer, and expanded track options, making these controls easier to reach and use without interrupting the flow of listening.

The result is a smartwatch experience that feels more intentional, reducing friction and making it easier to stay engaged with music throughout the day, while encouraging more consistent interaction without the need to constantly reach for a paired smartphone.

Spotify says the update will roll out over the coming days, bringing a more refined and responsive experience to Wear OS devices, with improvements designed to make navigation smoother, controls more accessible, and overall usability noticeably more fluid on smaller screens.
