Microsoft is preparing to bring its Copilot AI assistant directly to Xbox consoles later this year. This marks the next step in the company’s push to weave AI more deeply into gaming.

The feature, known as Gaming Copilot, has already appeared in beta across the Xbox mobile app, Windows 11, and the Xbox Ally handheld.

Now Microsoft plans to expand it to current-generation consoles. This is according to comments made by Xbox product manager Sonali Yadav during a panel at the Game Developers Conference.

The assistant is designed to act like a real-time gaming companion. Players can call on Copilot with voice commands when they get stuck in a game. For instance, they can ask questions such as how to defeat a difficult boss or which materials are needed to craft an item. In demonstrations shared by Microsoft, the AI can analyse the situation and suggest possible next steps. Essentially, it offers a built-in strategy guide.

Beyond moment-to-moment gameplay help, Gaming Copilot can also look at a player’s history to offer personalised game recommendations or answer questions about past activity. That could mean suggesting a new title based on what you’ve recently played. Alternatively, it could involve summarising your achievements across different games.

Microsoft hasn’t confirmed exactly which consoles will receive the update, but the company’s current lineup includes the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. This makes them the most likely candidates for the rollout.

The expansion of Copilot to Xbox fits into Microsoft’s wider strategy of embedding its AI assistant across multiple platforms. Over the past year the company has steadily integrated Copilot into Windows, productivity apps, and gaming services. Microsoft is positioning it as a universal digital helper.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s longer-term gaming hardware plans are still evolving. A future console platform reportedly known internally as Project Helix is in development. However, it’s not expected to reach an early testing stage until around 2027.

For now, Gaming Copilot’s arrival on Xbox consoles signals that AI-powered assistance may soon become part of everyday gameplay. This will be the case whether you’re looking for hints, recommendations, or simply a quicker way to figure out your next move.
