BYD Is Preparing A Cut Price That Will Hurt Tesla And Ionity

BYD is gradually rolling out its ultra-fast terminals in Europe. With a full tank completed in 9 minutes flat, one could have imagined that this service would be priced at a high price. Good news, this will not be the case, with prices which promise to be competitive.

Fast charging is fantastic! The fantasy of traveling in an electric vehicle across Europe has now become a reality. But the joy takes a completely different turn when receiving the painful: it will thus be 79 cents per kilowatt hour for the service provided. Expensive, you will agree… In short, recharging at home will remain much more interesting. Everyone will have understood that the charging power increases in parallel with the price per kilowatt hour.

Ultra-fast charging on the motorway: a pleasure that has become unaffordable?

So now imagine how much energy would cost on BYD’s Flash Chargers, delivering up to 1,500 kW… The Chinese would bleed us, right? Well it looks like we have a great surprise on that front. And we are not talking to you about Chinese pricing, but about that which will be practiced on our doorstep, in Europe. Their deployment has only just begun in Germany before being followed closely by the United Kingdom. It was at this moment that a precious word was stolen during an interview.

Less than 60 cents per minute? The unexpected confidence of the boss of BYD

Faced with journalists from Autocar, Bono Ge, director of BYD in the United Kingdom, affirms that “ in the best case, (BYD) would like to be below 50 pence per minute », which would correspond to approximately 58 euro cents per minute. In this sense, this would be much cheaper than with most operators like Ionity and Tesla. Since billing is based on duration and Flash Chargers are capable of ultra-fast recharges, the benefits accrue entirely to the customer.

BYD’s brilliant trick for storing electricity at low cost

Even if the BYD terminals deliver thunder, charging will remain less expensive than the competition thanks to intelligently used electricity. Flash Chargers draw energy from batteries that have been recharged at night when electricity is cheapest during off-peak hours. Note that all vehicles will be able to access Flash Chargers. But the financial advantage will only be viable with the BYD and Denza models equipped with the Blade 2.0 battery effectively allowing recharging reaching 1,500 kW.

Universal terminals: at what price for cars other than BYD?

The benefit will be more measured for other vehicles, which will not be able to charge as quickly. BYD is also offering additional benefits to first Denza owners with 18 months of free fast charging in the United Kingdom. France should follow with a similar principle. However, it is possible that per-minute pricing will shift to per-kilowatt-hour pricing, which will reshuffle the cards between Flash Chargers and other networks. BYD will then have to charge a price below 30 cents per kilowatt hour to compete with the best. Sustainable or not?
