HPE World Quantum Day: Quantum computing future – News

If two things can be true at the same time, then quantum computing is here today and will become a major factor in a few years as well.

Quantum computing has evolved from theoretical concepts in the 1980s to a computing architecture that can process vast amounts of data simultaneously. The technology uses qubits or quantum bits as basic units of information which, unlike classical computing, can exist as both a 0 and 1 at the same time.

This capability gives quantum enormous power to solve highly complex problems in a fraction of the time compared to the capabilities of today’s systems. Although some practical uses for quantum exist today, the technology is generally believed to be a few years away from widespread deployment because of the complex physics that drives it.

“Quantum’s going to help solve these highly dimensional, super complex data intensive workloads, because you need that compute power,” according to Scott Hebner, principal analyst for AI at theCUBE Research. “We’re just going to optimize it through our pre-built models and agents and services around your industry.”

Alliance powers quantum computing

While quantum represents a new chapter in the evolution of modern computing, its rise does not necessarily mean that classical machines will become obsolete overnight. HPE is taking an approach that will accelerate computing breakthroughs while integrating advances into existing supercomputing platforms.

As part of this strategy, HPE has recently participated in the launch of the Quantum Scaling Alliance. This collaboration, announced in November, is designed to make quantum computing scalable, practical, and transformative across industries. In addition to HPE, founding members include Applied Materials, Synopsys, Quantum Machines and the University of Wisconsin.

The initiative will be overseen by Dr. Masoud Mohseni from HPE Labs, the applied research arm of HPE, who will serve as the quantum systems architect.

“For quantum to succeed as a viable long-term computing paradigm, it must scale by integrating with classical supercomputing systems,” Mohseni said. “The Quantum Scaling Alliance is offering a full-stack solution—a large partnership with horizontal integration that unlocks compute potential that is otherwise unachievable through a vertical approach.”

Co-development with labs

In addition to HPE’s scaling alliance with industry practitioners, the company is also forming collaborations in the quantum field with laboratories at the forefront of computational research.

In November, HPE unveiled a partnership with the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory to open new insights into quantum and identify integration strategies with AI and high-performance computing for scientific discovery. The partnership also includes Nvidia Corp., which is interested in uniting its powerful GPU supercomputers with emerging quantum processors.

Collaborative examples such as these highlight how HPE is pursuing quantum initiatives that will undoubtedly push the boundaries of exascale computing, while building new routines for decoding errors and reducing bottlenecks. The intersection of high-performance computing, AI and quantum is creating new opportunities within the enterprise world.

“For decades, these technologies have largely evolved in parallel,” HPE’s Mohseni noted. “Now, a fundamentally different architecture is emerging in which distributed quantum processors operate alongside classical supercomputing infrastructure and AI-driven control systems as a tightly coupled system.”
