Huawei will be one of the first companies to begin small-scale commercialization of vehicles with Level 3 semi-autonomous driving capabilities for use on highways in China this year, Li Wenguang, a president at Huawei’s Intelligent Driving Solution Product Line, said on July 11, local media reported. Meanwhile, the company will begin testing Level 4 highly autonomous vehicles on city streets this year, with plans to push for larger-scale adoption of its technology on Chinese roads in 2026, Li told this year’s China Auto Forum in Shanghai. The comments were delivered several months after the Chinese technology giant released the fourth-generation of its Qiankun advanced driving system (ADS) in April, when the company announced that it was prepared for the commercial use of L3 semi-autonomous driving cars on Chinese highways. Huawei will need regulatory approval from Beijing before drivers can access the technology in their cars. The L3 conditional autonomous system allows the human driver not to monitor the vehicle constantly but to be ready to take control, according to the definitions set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
