Forget Horizon Worlds and legless avatars. After investing and losing tens of billions of dollars in the metaverse, the group led by Mark Zuckerberg is completely changing its strategy. The Menlo Park company is throwing itself body and soul into the robotics race by buying Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI)a young company specializing in AI for robots. This acquisition is much more than just a transaction; she signs it start of a new era for the firm.

Why is this acquisition so strategic for Meta?

The acquisition of ARI is not a coincidence. The startup, co-founded by renowned researchers like Xiaolong Wang (ex-Nvidia) and Lerrel Pinto (ex-NYU and co-founder of Fauna Robotics, acquired by Amazon), provides cutting-edge expertise. Their goal was to create fundamental AI models to enable robots to understand, predict and adapt to human behavior in complex environments. By integrating the entire ARI team into its research laboratory, the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), Meta absorbs crucial know-how.

Excited to share that Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) has joined @Meta to help build the future of humanoid intelligence!

When we started ARI one year ago, our mission was clear: achieve physical AGI. Through deep customer engagements and real-world deployments, it became clear… https://t.co/4hGmcgcJzt

This expertise is essential to Meta’s ambition to develop what its technical director, Andrew Bosworth, describes as a ” Android for robots “. The idea is not necessarily to build and sell your own machines, but to provide the “ software brain » which other manufacturers may use under license. It’s a strategy that has made Google successful in the world of smartphones, and one that Meta hopes to replicate in the emerging humanoid robot sector.

What is the company’s long-term vision?

Meta’s vision goes beyond simply creating software. Many experts in artificial intelligence consider that the next major step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI)an AI capable of surpassing human intellect, will go throughinteraction with the physical world. Training AI models only on text data has its limitations; robots that learn through direct experience could unlock new capabilities.

The acquisition of ARI is therefore part of this quest for AGI. By equipping itself with skills for the complete control of humanoid robots, the company is positioning itself not only on a hardware marketbut also on the next big breakthrough of AI. It’s a long-term bet that could redefine the company well beyond social networks.

How does Meta position itself against the competition?

Meta is clearly not alone in this niche. Competition is already fierce, with major players investing heavily. Tesla, for example, has been working on its robot for several years Optimus and even repurposed automobile production lines to speed up its manufacturing. For its part, Google is developing its own models, Gemini Robotics, to animate automatons.

The economic potential is dizzying and explains this enthusiasm. Estimates vary widely, reflecting both promises and technological uncertainties. Goldman Sachs predicts a $38 billion market by 2035, while Morgan Stanley sees much bigger with a projection of up to 5 trillion dollars by 2050. By purchasing ARI, Meta is ensuring not to miss what could be the next big technological wave.
