According to the current registration figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 116,053 VW ID.3s were registered in Germany as of January 1st, but only 106,184 Tesla Model Ys (test). A year earlier, the Model Y was still ahead. Since the beginning of the year, slightly more Model Ys have been newly registered, but not nearly enough to catch up with the lead of the ID.3.

Last year, both models were the first pure electric vehicles to exceed the hundred thousand threshold in inventory figures in Germany. A third model is likely to follow soon or has perhaps already done so – at least if you add up the KBA, VW ID.4 and VW ID.5. At the beginning of the year, 97,120 of these two models were already registered in Germany. A good 5,000 units were newly registered in the first quarter. Even if you take into account the typical loss due to defects, shutdowns or foreign sales, they should still reach a six-figure range.

VW has been leading at the brand level for a long time

The fact that the best-selling electric model was a Tesla for a long time is due to the fact that the brand only has two models with relevant registration numbers in Germany, so the total number is less spread out. Now that wasn’t enough anymore. From a brand perspective, VW has already been ahead of Tesla for a long time.

If you look at the total vehicle population, even the most registered electric cars are still way behind. First place goes to the VW Golf (test) with a huge lead and 3.2 million registered vehicles. Several tens of thousands of e-Golfs (test) included. That’s more than all electric cars on German roads combined: at the beginning of the year there were 2.03 million.

The Golf is followed by the VW Polo with 1.3 and the Opel Corsa (test) with 1.1 million. Incidentally, all three are showing a downward trend, like most models in the top group. The shift towards so-called SUVs, which have been increasingly successful for a quarter of a century, is likely to be noticeable in recent years. The most common model with increasing inventory is this: The VW Tiguan (test) reached ninth place with 811,016 registered vehicles on January 1st.
