Wine 11.6 is out as the newest bi-weekly development release for this open-source software enabling Windows games and applications on Linux, macOS, and other platforms.
Notable with Wine 11.6 is that it has begun reviving its Android driver. Wine for Android hasn’t seen too much work in recent time. Back in 2024 was talk of Wine on Android with DXVK/VKD3D-Proton plus FEX for running Windows games on Android but not too much on that “Cassia” effort since. Going back over a decade were original efforts to get Wine on Android and running Solitaire as an example. Or all the way back in 2013, Wine On Android Is Coming For Running Windows Apps:
For Wine 11.6 there is build system updates around Android, updating the Wine Android code for modern Gradle versions, and other adaptations for dealing with more recent Android versions. We’ll see if this revived Android driver work for Wine is part of a larger effort with more improvements over upcoming releases.
Also significant with Wine 11.6 is updating the DLL loader order heuristics for better supporting game mods.
Plus there are VBScript compatibility fixes and around 28 other bug fixes in this bi-weekly development release. Bug fixes help out software from .NET apps to StarOffice to various games.
