Backing up your iPhone or iPad to your Mac remains the fastest and most complete way to protect your data before updates, repairs, or hardware changes. Apple built local backup support directly into macOS through Finder, allowing full-device backups without relying on an internet connection.

Local backups are like full system snapshots, saving your device settings, messages, app data, and media stored on your device. Backing up to iCloud does save your data, but restoring from a Mac is also faster than from because the data transfers directly over USB.
